26th Schafberg Run
5360 St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut
26th Schafberglauf - running pleasure on the panoramic mountain!
The 26th edition of the Schafberglauf in St. Wolfgang will be a very special race this year: for the first time, the Austrian Athletics Association has awarded the Austrian Mountain Running Championships to the experienced team of organizers from the St. Wolfgang running community.
Start at 15:00 at the valley station of the SchafbergBahn with finish in St. Gilgen.
The classic Schafberg run
In 1983, during the 90th anniversary celebrations of the Schafbergbahn, Franz Zimmermann came up with the idea of offering the run as a sporting event for all runners. Start numbers were quickly made out of cardboard and the race could begin. The starting field was still very small back then, the time was measured by hand and the results list was on an A4 sheet of paper.
Since then, the race has taken place every spring. Only once was it only possible to run as far as the Schafbergalm due to the onset of winter.
The Schafbergtrail
Runners know it well, you only give up one letter. And so, after three corona-related cancellations of the Schafberglauf, the chairman of the St. Wolfgang running community, Werner Haas, came up with the idea of organizing a run up the Schafberg in summer after all. A few like-minded people were quickly enthusiastic and the planning could begin. However, as the railroad line cannot be used in the high season, the normal route up the Schafberg is available as an alternative. Only a short stretch of asphalt road has to be mastered. Two thirds of the route is on forest floor through a beautiful mixed forest, the last third via the Schafbergalm to the summit offers wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Some runners also rumor that this route is actually more beautiful than the one along the railroad ...
Course
The route is on asphalt for the first 500 meters and then turns into a beautiful forest path through the mixed forest to the Schafbergalm. From the Schafbergalm there is a wonderful panorama over the picturesque Salzkammergut. Start at the Schafberg train station in St. Wolfgang along the Schafbergstraße. Continue on the Müllnerbühel and the forest road constantly uphill. After approx. 1.3 kilometers, turn left onto hiking trail 24, briefly downhill over the Dittelbach. Uphill again, cross the Schafbergbahn and pass the Aschinger snack station on the left. Immediately after the snack station, hiking trail 23 begins. This leads continuously to the Schafbergalm and over the overpass on to the Schafberg. The destination is at Schafberg station.
The Schafbergbahn has to be crossed twice on the route. Stewards are on site. In the event of an encounter, the Schafbergbahn has priority.
Leaving the marked hiking trails is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate disqualification.
Special consideration must be given to grazing cattle in the alpine pasture area (safety distance). Dogs are not allowed for safety reasons!
