Mahler believed that nature held the key to the depths of life. He once summarized this as follows: "So I can be given the title: 'Singer of Nature'" and describes himself as an artist who is inspired by sacred life and gains knowledge from it. Significantly, the second and third movements of the Third Symphony are entitled "What the flowers in the meadow tell me" and "What the animals in the forest tell me" - a clear acknowledgement by the composer of his close relationship with nature.
