The Hintersee in the Salzburg region is a hidden gem for nature lovers

Hintersee is not only the smallest village of the Salzburg Alpine foreland, but also a natural paradise in a hidden side valley. Located in the mountain world of the Osterhorngruppe and by the idyllic lake, visitors find pure peace and relaxation here.

Thus, Hintersee rightfully enjoys its reputation as one of the most versatile lakes in the Salzkammergut. The 5-kilometer long loop trail, suitable for strollers and family-friendly, impresses with its undeveloped, freely accessible shore areas.

The crystal-clear bathing lake offers swimming spots and beach resorts with all the extras such as beach volleyball courts, sunbathing lawns, children's playgrounds, petting zoos, rowboats, and more. The alpine area of Hintersee/Faistenau, with its 150 km of hiking trails, is also a paradise for mountain enthusiasts. And what could be more beautiful than cooling off in the crystal-clear lake after a hike!

But even in winter, Hintersee offers a dreamlike opportunity for winter hiking and to enjoy the deeply snow-covered landscape along the lake.

Quagga mussels and crayfish plague can be inadvertently transferred with water sports, fishing, or diving equipment from one body of water to another.

This is how you can protect Hintersee:

  2. Thoroughly clean equipment

  3. Let dry completely for at least 4 days – before switching lakes
