The enchanting dances from the Renaissance period arranged by Respighi introduce the evening's program and lead into Haydn's D major Cello Concerto, which, along with the C major Cello Concerto, is part of the standard repertoire of the great cellists.

Tchaikovsky called his only string sextet, composed in 1890, "Memories of Florence"; it was to be his last chamber music work. Despite its title, it is a very "Russian" work due to its special melodic richness and tonal opulence, displaying all the characteristics of the mature Tchaikovsky. Its effect is further heightened in the very often played larger string section.
