New Horizons
Current Results on Iron Age Salt Mining in Hallstatt
Through a restoration project supported by the Republic of Austria and the State of Upper Austria, numerous archaeological sites in the Hallstatt salt mine have been made accessible for research again in recent years by the Natural History Museum Vienna and Salinen Austria AG. As a result, a large finding area on the Maria-Theresia horizon was extensively investigated for the first time through archaeological excavations and core drilling, yielding sensational results. A huge, iron-age mining area from a previously hardly researched extraction phase of the 6th century B.C. has been confirmed, enriching the picture of prehistoric salt mining with numerous facets. The lecture presents the current results of the interdisciplinary investigations of the Natural History Museum in cooperation with Salinen Austria and Salzwelten.
The festive lecture will be musically accompanied by Leonie Marie Felbinger on the zither. Afterwards, a cozy gathering at the buffet will take place.
